Gibson was born and raised in Australia with a degree in Design in Visual Communications at UTS. He took up freelance jobs before starting at Red Ape. He now works at Animal logic.
Gibson’s art style focuses on the fantastical, wonderful and weird.
Q: What Inspires you the most when it comes to art?
A: Art’s ability to express what words cannot
Q: When did you realise/decide that you wanted to become an artist?
A: My parents introduced me to the magic of cinema at the age of 3 – they took me to see Jurassic Park.” Several soiled diapers later I couldn’t stop drawing dinosaurs.
Q: What was your first job as an artist?
A: First unofficial job was a for a tattoo design for my cousin… so much regret. First official job was designing a mascot for channel 9
Q: What influences do you think comes into your specific style of art?
A: Quirky, strange, humorous but somewhat grounded in reality. So I try to draw influence from nature and the world around us.
Q: Who is a dream artist to collaborate or paint with? (Dead or Alive)
A: Perhaps Shaun Tan if I had to pick one.
Q: What advice would you give to people who are just starting out in this field?
A: Keep an open mind and be interested in as many things as possible, it’ll help expand your library and your ability to pull references unique to your design and creative abilities.
